This children's television programme began its life in July of 1992 in Australia, since this point the programme has been played in many different countries all over the world. The programme was simply based on the song 'Bananas in Pyjamas' written by Carey Blyton all the way back in 1967, and to suite the series this catchy song became the theme tune to the series. At the time Carey Blyton was a very successful composer for the television world, as well as composing the theme tune for the Bananas in Pyjamas franchise, he also did a lot of music for the Doctor Who series. Let's not forget that he was also the brother of children's author Enid Blyton. So this factor alone provided a very good start for this children's TV series.
The plot behind the episodes is normally pretty basic, it involves two main banana characters who can simply be entitled B1 and B2 who all live in the same neighbourhood as three teddy bears, and a Rat in a Hat. The TV series simply shows you what they get up to each day. Some days they would sing songs, and some days they would just be bantering with each other, sure the plotline remained very basic but this did not stop it from being an instant hit with children all over the world.
The show would see human actors dressed up in huge banana costumes, in the beginning they would voice their characters from the inside of the costume, but they quickly gave up on this concept as it was just too hot in the costumes to do both.
Considering that Bananas in Pyjamas is based around people dressed up in a costume, it's probably no surprise that in the world of fancy dress a Bananas in Pyjamas costume was on the way very soon to satisfy the thousands of fun party goers.
Bananas in Pyjamas has been revamped very recently by Southern Star Entertainment, this time though, they have chosen to go for the CGI approach instead of using live characters. The new series is refreshing for the younger generation as it contains new songs, new stories, and just general new adventures from the cast. The new series contains 104 12-minute episodes. So this craze that was started all those years ago is bound to last much longer into the future. To emphasise how big Bananas in Pyjamas became we can tell you that the programme also produced a brand of cuddly toys who sang the theme tune to the show back at you if you pressed a button on their hand.
So are you thinking what I'm thinking? Yes that is right, you should pick up your bananas in pyjamas costume today, and take yourself back to your youth!
