Dalek Costumes & Ideas

No matter what generation you come from you will all know the legendary Doctor Who, in recent years we have seen a re-make from the show which originally started in the 60's. Now we all know one of the main villains in this franchise, the Daleks! I mean who doesn't know the classic short but sweet Dalek saying "EXTERMINATE!" Although the average Dalek resembles a full sized salt and pepper shaker with a tank like appearance, they are still known as one of the most scariest and respected science fictional characters in the world and for fans of doctor who you will be pleased to know that we have a great range of fancy dress for time travel fans of all ages.

The Daleks were created by the brilliant writer that is Terry Nation, and then of course the BBC designer Raymond Cusick took this idea onto the TV programme. So in December of 1963 this classic character was born, although they didn't hit the Doctor Who show until series 2 they were still a huge hit with fans all across the world.

In the TV series Doctor Who the Daleks were robot type characters from the science fictional planet Skaro, they were crafted by scientist Davros. As soon as this mechanical race was born they were simply determined in taking over the galaxy. Over time they have been known as the biggest enemy of the "Time Lord" who can also be known as Doctor Who. In episodes of the show they would show hate for anything non Dalek related. On rare occasions the race would show fear, but this never really happened as Dalek were such a harsh and fierce race.

Two of the concepts that have made this character so big include its voice and movement. The voice of a Dalek is a very harsh sound, it sounds very futuristic with a computer type sound. Voice actors Peter Hawkins and David Graham were the people who came up with the simple but effective Dalek voice. Ever since they used sound processing devices to master this sound back 1963 the technique has pretty much stayed the same ever since. When it came to movement The Daleks obviously had no feet, so the models were designed so that they could move by nylon casters with an actor inside the model walking at the same time, this of course created a very futuristic robot image. In recent years they have been installed with better wheels but the whole image of a Dalek really hasn't been adapted or changed that much since the beginning.

In 2010 Daleks were voted the all time greatest monster by the huge film and science fiction magazine SFX, they beat of huge competition from Gollum (Lord Of The Rings) and Godzilla, so I think that this fact along proves why the Dalek costume is such a unique and respected outfit to dress as!
