When it comes to fancy dress there are not many that can boast one of the largest ranges of costumes in the UK and while we are constantly adding to our massive range, one range of costumes that have been with us for a while and are still one of the most popular are the Kiss costumes. So just who are Kiss and why are they so popular?
Kiss first started out in the early 70's they were obviously known for their abstract stage look which involved them painting their faces in an interesting way, and wearing space like costumes. Their live performances were what made the band big, on stage they would spit blood, light their guitars on fire, breath fire, and have shed loads of pyrotechnics, all in the name of rock N roll.
The co founders of kiss Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were originally in a band called Wicked Lester, they released one album which really didn't get much success, as a result of this the guys wanted to take their sound in a new direction, they quickly found drummer Peter Criss after placing an ad in the East Coast version of the vintage Rolling Stone magazine. Shortly after this the band added Ace Frehley to the band as they were so impressed after his first audition, two weeks after this the band changed their name to the now worldwide known name of "Kiss". Frehley quickly created the logo which is known for having two "SS" that look like lightning bolts. This logo is still remembered as an iconic logo to this day.
The band shortly got signed to Casablanca Records and entered Bell Sound Studios on October 10, 1973 to start recording their first album! The self titled album Kiss was released on February 18th in 1974, this album got them a slot on ABC's Dick Clarks in concert which marked the first time the band had appeared on TV. Although this album got Kiss a lot of promotion it only managed to help sell 75,000 copies of their first album.
As events were starting to turn down hill for the band the studio quickly pulled them back into the studio for another attempt, this is when the classic album "Rock and Roll All Nite" was born. At this point Kiss still weren't selling records very well, but their live performances were gaining a lot of attention.
Luckily their careers started to take off again, with the release of "Rock and Roll Over" in 1976 and "Love Gun" in 1977, Kiss quickly came back to top form. After this point the band managed to go on to release some of the biggest albums in history including "Asylum" and "Crazy Nights".
In the UK the biggest song that Kiss ever released was "Crazy Crazy Nights" which hit number 4 in the UK singles chart! The kiss legacy still lives on as the band continue to record and tour around the world, their last album Sonic Boom has done very well, and even if they are nearly 40 years into their career it seems they are not showing any signs of slowing down just yet.
