Rainbow Costumes & Ideas

Rainbow is a classic children's TV series; it ran twice weekly and had a massive fan base of both children and adults. It ran from 1972 – 1992, proving itself to be one of the longest and most successful running TV programmes of our generation. In 1975 Rainbow also won the "Society of Film and television Arts Award for Best Children's Programme" so this puts the TV series miles ahead of many competitors and it's this popularity that has lead to the great range of Rainbow fancy dress costumes that we have in stock.

The TV series Rainbow orbited around the Rainbow House, where all of the unique puppet characters lived in. Most of the time it would involve a debate or quarrel between the main characters, the rest of the show would show the characters trying to calm each other down. There wasn't really a massive storyline to this programme, but I think this unique fact about it has helped it stand out against a lot of other children's TV programmes from the time. The show would also include songs or stories from the "Rainbow Storybook" which would be read by the human character Geoffrey.

Although Geoffrey Hayes was not the first presenter to feature on Rainbow he was by far the most well known presenter. He would be the one to give the characters of the rainbow household something to do; he was really the key to keeping this crazy plot together.

So let's just take a moment to talk through some of the other classic characters in this franchise that have given us some great fancy dress costumes, first we had Zippy! He was loud and always over the top, but he was always very friendly at heart. He had a zip for a mouth which made for great entertainment, as when he got to loud or annoying, other characters would tend to zip his mouth shut. Zippy himself has a massive fan base, and he is actually known all over the world, to this day there is still merchandise sold that is based on Zippy.

Bungle is another classic character that we all remember; he was a brown bear who came across as slightly clumsy and impatient about other characters in the programme. He was another massive character in this franchise, and one that a lot of us still remember, and of course let's not forget George.
