Rubiks Cube Costumes

Who would have thought you could make a fancy dress costume out of a plastic 3D puzzle? We'll that exactly what we have and we're really pleased they did because this is another great costume to add to our range of fancy dress.

The Rubik's cube is a 3D puzzle which was invented in 1974 by the Hungarian sculptor "Erno Rubik" six years on from its invention in 1980 the toy went on to win the German Game of the Year for 'Best Puzzle' and as of January 2009 it had sold 350 million units world-wide. Very impressive for a toy we think!

The idea behind the Rubik's Cube is simple. You have a cube with 6 sides and 9 faces on each side. With six different colours the goal was to get each side showing the individual colours, sounds easy right? Well why don't you have a go and just see how long it takes you!

So in the mid 70's professor of Architecture "Erno Rubik" came up with this genius idea while teaching his class, the original name for the toy was called the "Magic Cube". The toy was sold in Budapest toy shops up until 1980 and this was when we saw the release of the "Magic Cube" in the western world. In January and February of 1980 the toy made its international debut in London, Paris, Nuremberg and New York. At this point the name of the toy also changed to the now legendary name of "Rubik's Cube" and to this day this toy is still a hit world-wide.

Our ladies Rubik's Cube costume includes a dress with the slogan "the ultimate brain teaser" and a Rubik's Cube head band/hat, just add black tights and black shoes to complete the look for a really original fancy dress costume.

The current world record for figuring out a Rubik's Cube is 6.24 seconds, and this record was achieved by Feliks Zemdegs in 2011. Also in 2010 another record was broken for most people solving a Rubik's Cube at once, this was done by a group of school boys at Dr Calloner's Grammar School in Amersham, England. This just shows how famous and well known the Rubik's Cube has remained since its formation in the early 70's.

Over the years we have also seen some variations on the Rubik's Cube with up to seven layer cubes being created. An electronic cube was also created entitled 'CESailor Tech's E-cube' this product greatly advanced on the original idea by using RGB LEDs and switches.

The Rubik's Cube has also been seen in many TV programmes and films to kind of prove characters intelligence. An example of this can be seen in the film "The Pursuit of Happiness" where Chris (Will Smith) is an American citizen struggling for employment, upon his search for employment he meets a manager for the company 'Dean Witter' and shows of his intelligence by solving the Rubik's Cube in a short cab ride.
