Wham Costumes

When you think back to the 80's where cheesy pop music was dominating the charts, Wham! are surely one of the first groups you think of. And when you think of 80's costumes you can't help but think about the amazing fancy dress that came out of this amazing era.

The original members of Wham George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley met in Bushey Meads Comprehensive School, the first couple of songs they wrote together were "Bad Boys" and "Young Guns (Go For It!)" the band were still young by this point but they tried to promote themselves as much as they could throughout the UK.

The first record they properly released in the UK was "Wham Rap!" which was released in June of 1981, this was one of the first songs released by a UK artist that had rapping in it. The song initially didn't do so well in the UK charts. Shortly after this they released "Young Guns (Go for It!)" this again didn't do so well in the charts. Their career was looking uncertain until they got a chance to perform on the legendary "Top of the Pops", their performance of "Young Guns" was watched by many, and it is still remembered to this day by many Wham! fans as one of the most crucial performances in the groups short lived career. Shortly after this the song re-entered the singles chart at Number 3.

After reissuing "Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do)" the group were shortly rivalling Culture Club and Duran Duran as one of the biggest pop acts in the UK. The group's debut LP "Fantastic" reached number 1 in the charts at the time as well. So in short Wham! had really gone a long way, in a very short time. It wasn't long after this that their followers starting dressing like their idols and even now 80's fancy dress parties will almost always see someone in a Wham costume.

In 1984 Wham! Returned to the music world with their classic hit "Wake Me up before you Go-Go" this was the groups first UK number 1 single, and it also hit number 1 in the USA quickly creating a massive following for the group all over the world. After this we saw the release of chart topper "Freedom" which was also hit number one in the singles charts. Around this time George Michael contributed vocals to the band aid classic "Do They Know It's Christmas" which shortly became a Christmas number 1. The song also out did the Wham! Christmas number one effort "Last Christmas" which hit number 2 in the singles charts. After a huge world tour the group decided to break up in 1986 as Michael didn't want to write music for his teenage audience anymore. Even though one of their last singles "The Edge of Heaven" hit number 1 in 1986 the band still decided to that this would be the end of their career.
